Summary

Civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) system is a basic development tool for planning and monitoring a country’s socio-economic policies. Indeed, it ranks prominently in the agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030 and in the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) action plan. However, in several sub-Saharan African countries including Burkina Faso, CRVS was struggling to play its full role despite the efforts made. CRVS is still weak, incomplete or dysfunctional. The coverage rate of vital events remains low while the individual and contextual associated factors are not well understood. This study was therefore initiated in collaboration with the Department of Modernisation of Burkina CRVS (DGMEC) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) with aim to contribute to a better understanding of under-completeness of CRVS and non-registration associated factors (geographical, socio-economic, cultural and anthropological) to vital records services in Burkina Faso.

This study is conducted in three Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) sites: Kaya, Nanoro and Nouna. The methodology approach consists in mapping the roads, vital records centers and selected locations within three study sites where vital events are regularly monitored in out of a total population of 245,380 inhabitants among 35,750 households. Subsequently, households sampled will be visited to assess knowledge and practices of CRVS in terms of demand and vital events (birth, death or marriage registration). Results of this study will allow us to improve and modernise the CRVS in Burkina Faso.
