RESEARCH PROJECT: Establishment of molecular epidemiology platform for
surveillance of multidrug resistance (MDR)-TB in West Africa
In this project, we will explore the dynamics that drive MDR-TB and the emergence of
extensively-drug resistant TB (XDR-TB) in the West Africa sub-region, building on an
established platform for surveillance of MDR-TB in the WANETAM-2 funding cycle (Florian
Gehre et al, BMC Inf Dis. 2016). We will consolidate on recently developed skills and
training on next-generation Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) and bioinformatics across
the TB NoE partner institutions. We will embed training and mentorship of early career
scientists into the research project on the use of molecular and genomic epidemiological
methods to investigate: (i) the epidemiology of MDR-TB and associated novel mutations;
(ii) population dynamics of TB strains; and (iii) treatment outcomes, across West Africa.
We will apply for additional funding to use the acquired skills to demonstrate proof-of—
concept utility of WGS for routine diagnostic workup of patients with MDR-TB. This will
allow determining the impact of WGS on important patient-relevant outcomes and to
explore whether WGS can be used to target prevention and control efforts. . . .
