Impact of improved diagnostic tools, practices and Training and Communication on acute fever case management and antibiotic prescriptions for children and adolescents presenting at outpatient facilities in Burkina Faso

·Summary

This is a multi-site, open label, two-armed randomized controlled diagnostic trial involving three African countries (Burkina Faso, Ghana and Uganda) and three Asian countries (Myanmar , Nepal and India), aimed to evaluate the new intervention package compared to the routine practice in children and adolescents of 6 months-18 years presenting at primary health facilities in rural areas. The study is implemented by a multidisciplinary team including specialist in development/evaluation of diagnostics tests (FIND Geneva, Switzerland) and a team specialised in clinical trial/test development and evaluation (IRSS, Burkina Faso).

The primary endpoints of this project are:

• Measure and compare proportion of cases with favourable outcome (defined as being alive and asymptomatic).
• Measure and compare antibiotic prescriptions in the health facilities

· Objectives

Primary objective: To describe current practices and assess the impact of a package of interventions including existing diagnostic tools and training and communication for care-givers and users on acute fever case management and antibiotic prescriptions for children and adolescents presenting at outpatient facilities in Burkina Faso.

Secondary objective: To assess the adherence to new practices by health care workers and patients/caregivers
